South West Skills Awards Success
Two local businesses and a plumbing apprentice nominated by South Devon College were finalists for the 2008 South West Skills Awards ceremony. They received their awards at the Sandy Park Exeter Chiefs Rugby Stadium from guest speaker and TV celebrity Ben Fogle.
The nominations were put forward by the apprenticeship team at South Devon College for the regional and national awards. Paul Champion, Apprenticeships Manager at the College said “I am delighted that our learners and the businesses that we nominated have been so successful. The awards are very highly respected and it is a great achievement.”
Kirsten Moran, a plumbing apprentice at the College won South West Apprentice of the Year. Kirsten started her apprenticeship in 2006 and is employed by TRECO Limited, a business providing sustainable, economic and environmentally friendly heating solutions.
Kirsten says “The apprenticeship scheme has allowed me to gain a great deal of experience including improving my personal development, my ability to work with others and building my confidence. Working with other trades at the College has given me an insight into how buildings are constructed and maintained. I was motivated to undertake a mechanical engineering plumbing apprenticeship NVQ level 2 as I wanted to gain an industry recognised qualification. In the future, I may even train to become a lecturer in these subjects. I feel that many of TRECO’s customers have benefited from having a female member of staff visiting them in their homes”.
