Posted: 19 October 2007

South West England’s leading champions in Green Energy are today celebrating being shortlisted as finalists for the region’s annual Green Energy Awards. The awards recognise the work of renewable energy companies, local authorities, communities, housing developers and individuals working to champion renewable energy across the region.

Regen SW has shortlisted candidates for six awards this year including a new category of ‘South West Renewable Energy Champion’ to recognise the outstanding work of achievements of individuals making a real difference to the development of renewable energy in the South West. An independent panel of renewable energy experts will now decide on the winners. The award categories are:

• Best Business Innovation
• Most Proactive Local Authority
• Best Sustainable Energy Community
• Best New Renewable Energy Scheme
• Best Housing Scheme
• South West Renewable Energy Champion

The award winners will be announced at a gala dinner on 13th November at the Winter Gardens in Weston-Super-Mare. The awards are being sponsored by Ocean Power Technologies.

This year, Cornwall, Devon and Dorset have done particularly well in terms of numbers of shortlisted entries. Cornwall and Devon both have six shortlisted entries, Dorset has three, and the Bristol area has two shortlisted.

Cornwall, Devon and Dorset County Councils have all made great strides in the development and implementation of renewable energy policies and measures, and this is now reflected in all three being in competition for the Most Proactive Local Authority Award.

In the Best New Renewable Energy Scheme category, the panel have shortlisted entries across three different technologies - wind, hydro and biomass, reflecting the breadth of activity that is taking place across the region.
The full shortlist is:

Matthew Spencer, Chief Executive of Regen SW said:

“This year’s Green Energy Award shortlist shows definite clusters of activity on renewable energy emerging in Cornwall, Devon, Bristol and Dorset. This is in part due to the existence of organisations or individuals in these areas who have a specific remit to facilitate renewable energy, and who have had an important role in stimulating innovative projects and new business activity.

“For the first time this year we are going to recognise the individuals who have done most to champion renewables on the ground - they are not household names, and often work behind the scenes, but we believe they deserve acclaim for their huge personal commitment and their success in delivering real solutions to climate change.”
