Overview
Temple Sutton is a primary school and nursery located in Southend-on-Sea in Essex.
The challenge
Southend-on-Sea Council approached Treco to assist its aim to increase energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint while reducing ongoing fuel costs. Treco successfully received the tender to design, supply a full turn-key installation of a 250kW L&S wood chip biomass boiler.
Our custom solution
Due to the nature of the site we had to make sure all deliveries were arranged outside school start, lunch and finish hours.
The existing plant room where the plant and fuel store were to be installed were subterranean, this meant special attention when it came to delivering plant as the stairs to access the plant room were too narrow. The boiler and thermal store had to be craned into place through a hole that was created for the fuel store roof. A bespoke weatherproof hatch also had to be designed to allow for tipped woodchip deliveries. Thought also had to be given to how ash would be removed from the boilers as again the stairs weren’t suitable. A bespoke vacuum system was designed to deal with this.
As this is a school, reliability was a key factor for Southend District Council when deciding on a supplier. The school retained their existing gas boilers to cover any peak loads and any downtime of the biomass boiler due to servicing and maintenance.
Treco were responsible for a full turn-key installation, including building of the fuel store. Treco worked closely with the school in order to minimise disruption to the site and maintain heating throughout term time.

The incentive
Southend-on-Sea Council was driven to increase energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint while reducing ongoing fuel costs.
In addition to the increasing the energy efficiency and environmental needs being looked after, the Council will also benefit from the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme that will see the system generating approximately £17,000 in payments every year for the next 20 years (index linked).
Taking all of this into consideration, the ROI on this project will be approximately six years.
